Keynotes - 'New Minds for a New Millennium'
Bruce has presented keynotes to a range of teacher organisations both in NZ and Internationally. Bruce believes that if students are to thrive in what will be an exciting and unpredictable future schools need both a new sense of direction and new styles of leadership. School need to define, along with their communities, a powerful future vision and then ensure through professional development that all are aligned behind such a shared vision. Future orientated schools need to create 'new mindsets for a new Millennium'. If schools were to achieve such a vision they could become the key element in the development of democratic communities where everyone is able to contribute.
Bruce is very happy to tailor a workshop or a keynote presentation to suit your needs. Refer to Curriculum Vitae (opens in new window) and/or Testimonials.
Keynotes:
Seminars/Workshops - 'Vision led Schools' and 'Quality teaching and Learning'
Bruce presents variations on two basic workshops:
  1. The first workshop focuses on how to create the vision of a school as a learning community based on shared values and teaching beliefs where all staff are aligned behind a common purpose that they all can articulate.
Vision Workshop/Seminars to create a shared vision for the school:

    • The Power of Vision and Shared Values
    • There must be Simpler Way - the importance of Vision

  2. The second workshop has the theme of Quality Teaching and Learning Strategies for classroom teachers. The emphasis of these workshops is placed the on the ‘art’ and the ‘craft’ of teaching rather than curriculum and accountability.
The Quality Teaching and Learning Workshops can be presented as Seminar for Combined Schools, as a Teacher Only day, or as series of Staff Meetings, preferably as part of a long term School Development process. All Bruce’s workshop/seminars share the 'best practices' of the creative teachers he has worked with over the years. They introduce teachers, through interactive activities, to a range of teaching strategies that build on: the best of 'child centred' learning, traditional values, and new ideas about how students learn.. A key idea is to do fewer things well - quality and depth rather than coverage. Bruce's belief is that we now know enough about learning that no student need fail, and that if we put such ideas into practice across a school, not only would students achieve more than often is currently expected but teaching would be more fun.
Workshops/Seminars to create quality Learning and Teaching:

    • Teacher Only Day or combined workshop Seminar
    • Staff meeting 1
    • Staff meeting 2
    • Combined vision and Quality learning Seminar

Whole School Development, School Review and/or Principal Appraisal
Over the past two or three years Bruce has been asked as part of a school Self Review Process to spend time in individual or clusters of schools in the role of a 'critical friend'. This involves a number of visits and could include: a review of all school documentation, discussions with members of the school community, visiting classrooms and the writing of a report for the BOT. This review process both affirms current school developments and is also an opportunity to gain suggestions to 'add value' to what the school has currently achieved. Often the review is tied in with the introduction of quality learning strategies which in turn can be integrated into the School's Performance Management System. As a result of the review process, and following input from all school stakeholders a School Vision and Teaching Beliefs Statement and a Strategy Plan could be developed. Where necessary the School Charter could also be amended. Th e Principal Appraisal can be included as part of the process if this is felt necessary by the BOT.

Bruce is happy to negotiate for any combination of the above Keynotes or aspects of School Development, Review/ Principal Appraisal.

Contact Bruce if interested.
